Focus group: sustainable careers in the visual arts

Oproep

What does physical and mental wellbeing mean in a high-pressure environment (time pressure, performance pressure, financial pressure, livelihood, pursuing sustainability,…). How do you deal with stress, burn-out, illness, and how do you ensure balance in your life so that you can continue to develop your artistic practice?
We believe that by coming together and sharing experiences, we can create a platform for open dialogue and support. Therefore, we invite you to participate in the following two moments:

NICC and Kunstenpunt want to explore sustainable careers in the visual arts sector. In our preliminary discussions, we identified that well-being and care are essential, but often underexposed, elements in the sustainable development of careers in the arts.

We believe that by coming together and sharing experiences, we can create a platform for open dialogue and support. Therefore, we invite you to participate in the following two moments:

1. Focus group

  • Date and time: Wednesday March 20, 10 am – 1 pm
  • Location: Kunstenpunt / NICC, Ravensteingalerij 38, 1000 Brussels
  • Language: English and Dutch

We will start with a small focus group of 10 participants that will prepare the plenary session on May 2, by exploring concepts such as ‘care’ and ‘well-being’ in a career in visual art. The focus group will also list possible formats for the track, e.g. workshops, presentations, panel discussions.

NICC and FAI will invite 10 artists and art workers to participate in the focus group. Artists who commit to contribute to the focus group will receive a fee of 150€ for 3 hours (excluding VAT).

The announcement of the 10 selected participants will be made on Tuesday 12 March.

2. Plenary session

  • Date and time: Thursday 2 May, 10:00 to 13:00pm CET
  • Location: TBC

The plenary session aims to have a conversation with a larger group and establish a support group where initiatives around welfare and care can be shared and strengthened. NICC intends to provide longer-term support to the group of engaged artists that emerges from this track.

The material from this session will be used by Flanders Arts Institute for the Landscape Sketch 2025. The Landscape Sketchis a comprehensive analysis of trends and developments in the arts landscape in Flanders and provides a basis for strategic considerations that the new Minister of Culture may make in his or her Strategic Vision.

The plenary session is open to all and is free of charge. Mark the date in your agenda. Registration will be available soon.
