Prizes and grants
In addition to subsidy programmes, there are also prizes and grants awarded by governments (such as the Flemish government or a city) or by private initiatives (such as companies or foundations). Prizes and grants are organised on a regular basis (e.g. annually, every two years or even every five years).
A prize or a grant gives you recognition and visibility. A prize or grant can be aimed at emerging talent, intended as encouragement, or at known talent as recognition. Some prizes or grants are not open to applications, some work with open calls, and others are determined by a jury.
Resources associated with these prizes and grants can range from sums of money or a production grant to services offered free of charge, such as a residency or a performance or stage opportunity.
Calls for prizes and grants are competitive and sometimes an entry fee is charged: always carefully consider whether the investment of time and money required to put yourself forward as a candidate is worth it. Investigate whether the initiators are ethical in creating opportunities for artists.
