Total Theatre Awards: four assessors from Flanders

(c) Steve Oates

This year is the 20th Anniversary of the Total Theatre Awards, which have been held 18 times since they began in 1997. Each year, 25 assessors from the UK and abroad come together in Edinburgh to identify excellence and evolving form in contemporary performance.

The shows shortlisted by the assessors are then seen by a panel of judges, culminating in seven awards across five categories: physical & visual theatre; innovation, experimentation & playing with form; emerging artist or company; circus; and dance.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, held from 4 until 28 August, celebrates its 70th edition.

Following an open call earlier this year, a delegation of four Flanders-based arts professionals have been selected by Total Theatre and Flanders Arts Institute to join the 2017 Total Theatre Awards Assessment Peer Network. Their time at the festival will be supported by the Embassy of Belgium and Flanders Arts Institute, who are both partners of Total Theatre Awards this year.

The participants from Flanders are Filip Tielens, freelance journalist for, among others, De Standaard, Klara, Zendelingen; Jessy Jolings, administrator to Compagnie de KOE; Els Van Malderen, cultural functionary and programmer at Vlaamse Gemeenschapscommissie, and Klaas Freek Devos, artist and dramaturge.

A delegation of up to six theatre professionals has been selected from Georgia, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Ukraine. They will be supported by the British Council.
