Small steps towards a new fair world. Read Flanders Arts Institute’s annual report

The year 2022 saw the start of the new policy period 2023-2027. For the first time, the subsidised field received structural support from a renewed Arts Decree (2021). During autumn, Flanders Arts Institute presented an analysis of the arts field as it looks after the distribution of funds. Topics covered: the solid inflow, the growth of smaller organisations, the increase in projects and grants. Issues such as increasing longevity and economic uncertainty were also on the table.

What is needed to realise those different opties? On this, everyone agreed: strong cohesion between different (groups of) players with not always the same interests. This requires more mutual knowledge and understanding between different types of players. Knowledge dissemination around this is one of the things Flanders Arts Institute will take extra to heart in 2023, starting with the initial preparations for the Landschapstekening Kunsten (2025).

In 2022, we completed our renewal and development project “A Fair New World?!” For two years we looked for ideas for a more sustainable, fairer and more inclusive arts field after the covid crisis. We linked it to a series of calls under the title “A Fair New Idea?!” We compiled all the collected insights in a final publication called “Art, Crisis and Transition“. The results of A Fair New Idea?! were presented in a programme of workshops on 2 March 2023.

Of course, we also remained true to our core tasks. We brought people together for meetings and exchanges, we informed newcomers, mid-careers and established professionals about the arts field -and policy. We monitored activities and innovation in our beautiful sector and put them in the shop window. New are our weekly online meetings where we explore how to help refugee arts professionals. We look for ways to make space available, lead them to jobs, share networks. All steps towards that fair new world.
