How to address structural discrimination in the arts?

Multiple voices in the workplace, in audience engagement and in artistic programs: everyone is striving for it. About the approach, we sometimes disagree.

How can we strive for more inclusiveness in the arts? And how do we do that? In early June, we hosted a public talk that tackled this theme in depth with: Shirin Mirachor (keynote), Marlies De Munck (moderator), Maartje Stubbe, Aïda Gabriëls and Jaïr Tchong.

Public talk: How to address structural discrimination in the arts?

Take affirmative action. You want to specifically lower barriers to entry, for example for “young” creators, “mid career” art workers, people of color or from non-dominant cultural backgrounds, for women or for those who do not identify as men, for people with physical, mental or cognitive disabilities.

According to some, this is tantamount to discrimination. For others, only the criterion of “quality” or “talent” may be paramount. Some fear polarization by pitting groups of people against each other. Still others wonder “where it will all end.”

Opinions abound, but rarely is there any in-depth discussion. With this public talk we want to do just that. What paths can we take in our pursuit of greater inclusiveness? Are there limits – legal, practical, principled? And what can we agree on so that we can move forward as quickly as possible?
