Landschap Sketch of the Arts: session Young Audiences

Do you work within the performing arts field with or for young audiences? Then be sure to come to the Landscape Sketch of the Arts: session Young Audiences on April 26, 2024 in hetpaleis (Antwerp). Together we will discuss issues around making, presenting and producing work with, by and for children and young people.

Session Young Audiences

We will start the day with an introduction of the process to the Landscape Sketch and an explanation of the five working tables. After lunch we invite you to engage in conversation in smaller groups, joining two of the following tables:

TABLE 1 – Professional, what is that?

What do we consider as professional performing arts for or by young audiences? Is there a clear separation between performing arts for young audiences and adults? Do specific valuation frameworks apply to performing arts for young audiences?

TABLE 2 – Friction between economic and social values

What is the economic and social value of performing arts for or with young audiences? How is this valorized in the arts sector, and beyond?

TABLE 3 – Training opportunities and the professional artist

What training opportunities exist for young creators who want to create for young audiences and/or with young people? How is this addressed within those training programs? What are the entry and progression issues within the field?

TABLE 4 – Inclusion

Social and cultural diversity among younger generations is increasing. Do we see this diversity represented on and off stage (role models), in the stories we tell (canon) and in the audience? How do we deal with needs and frictions when trying to be inclusive? Where is our tolerance limit today, from the audience but also from the creation to the audience?

TABLE 5 – Public

What issues, challenges and opportunities present themselves in the relationship we establish with our audiences today? How do we work to broaden, deepen and actively engage audiences today? How do we deal with an audience that (compared to the evening circuit) does not (always) choose to be in the theater themselves? Are our ways of working attuned to current and future audiences?
