At this biennial edition of the internationale tanzmesse nrw, Wallonie-Bruxelles Théâtre/Danse, Flanders Arts Institute and the German-speaking Community of Belgium will host a booth representing the singularity of the contemporary Belgian dance scene.

This edition of the internationale tanzmesse nrw takes place from 29 August to 1 September 2018. Tanzmesse hosts the largest professional gathering dedicated exclusively to contemporary dance.

Six Belgian productions have been selected for the festival:

Autoctonos II – RUDA (open studio / pitch)

In Autóctonos II, choreographer Ayelen Parolin alludes to the imagery of the circle – supposed to bring (back) together, to unite – and is an affirmation of stability, of order and standardization. These are the cornerstones of her choreographic development for the quintet of a pianist and four dancers. Parolin questions the place of the group, and of ‘belonging to a group’ by challenging the physical tenacity and commitment of the performers.

being – Grip (open studio / pitch)

being has developed through the encounter of Icelandic choreographer and dancer Bára Sigfúsdóttir and the two Tehran artists Masoumeh Jalalieh and SeyedAlireza Mirmohammadi. Starting from the body as the common ground, they explore and compare Western European with Iranian (and thus also Middle Eastern) culture and society in order to create a dialogue. The encounter between the bodies on stage, but also between the bodies and the audience, serves as a sober gesture.

Eat it ! – Compagnie Irene K. (open studio / pitch)

Eat it ! is an adventurous story about the earth and the fruit it bears. Every thin slice that is being cut reveals an ever so delicate human and political message. Digging, rooting, within your body and soul. Fingers piercing into the ground, longing to harvest potatoes, deeply hidden in fertile ground. Should we steal it, keep it, protect or share it?

INCORPORER – Olga de Soto (full performance)

A large and bare space in silence. The silence is broken and the space becomes malleable through sound work, specially developed to render visible and audible certain actions that the performer produces. INCORPORER (to incorporate) is a work on the variability of proportions. At times it brings the spectators close to or right up against the performers, so they can hear subterranean, buried sounds. At other moments, they are left at a distance. Through this amplification of sound and action, which acts as a kind of zoom, the space becomes flexible. With INCORPORER, choreographer Olga de Soto goes deeper into the exploration of solitude, corporeal matter and bodily states, the occupation of space and the relationship to time.

Mozambican choreographer and dancer Panaibra Gabriel Canda collaborates in his latest work And if we become child again with the renowned Belgian video artist Walter Verdin. Inspired by the authors Janusz Korczak and Fernando Pessoa, they deal with the different worlds and perceptions of adults and children and with lost or buried utopias.

(B) – Siamese Cie (full performance)

(B) is the powerful heavyweight clash between three boxers and seven dancers. From a variety of backgrounds, they all throw everything they have into the dance ring. In dazzling group choreographies and intimate duets, their interior worlds debate with the unrelenting outside world. Frenetic soundscapes and old arias, together with live and recorded video footage, enhance the performers. (B) is an energetic, exhausting and merciless ode to boxing, dance and life. It conveys huge warmth for faltering, ailing humanity.
