Theatre festival ‘Quartieri di Vita’ (Naples) is looking for a director from Flanders to work during two weeks with vulnerable groups from the Campania region.

What?

A director from Flanders with a socially engaged practice is invited to work with a group of vulnerable citizens from 19 November to 3 December 2023, in collaboration with an Italian director. The vulnerable groups include at-risk youth, victimised women, people with a migration background, people with different abilities, people with mental vulnerability.

The workshop will take place in Italian as not all participants are proficient in English, and an Italian-English interpreter will be provided, it is therefore necessary to have a proper understanding of the English language. The duration of the workshop will vary between 4 and 6 hours a day. Small presentation moments will be provided within this period.

In the autumn, the selected director from Flanders will meet the group and the Italian director via videoconferencing, and together they will prepare the workshop.

Context

This workshop is organised in the framework of ‘Quartieri di vita’, an annual festival focusing on art and society in the Campania region (Naples). It is already the third edition in which the organisers also involve foreign artists.

For this, they have made an effort to reach out to vulnerable groups who are receptive to it, such as women victims of violence, vulnerable young people, people with a migration background, the differently-abled and people with mental vulnerability. For each group, there is also an Italian director.

Each group (together with the Italian director) will attend a two-week workshop led by a foreign director, who has experience with the specific vulnerabilities. For this purpose, the festival collaborates with cultural institutions abroad such as, the Goethe Institut, Czech Cultural Institute, Austrian Cultural Forum, Institut Français, Instituto Cervantes, Embassy of Lithuania etc, who will nominate one director from their country.

For Flanders, the Flemish Diplomatic Representation in Rome is working with Flanders Arts Institute to select a director from Flanders.
