Fingerprints: signatures from composing Flanders

Fingerprints is a CD series used to spotlight composers nationally and internationally. In 2011, ComAV, Klara and Kunstenpunt/Flanders Arts Institute launched the series, with the aim of promoting the work of living composers to (inter)national professionals and the broader public. Each CD provides a sampling of composing Flanders. The music is distributed amongst music professionals and given a place in Klara’s midday programming.

At the moment, we are excitedly preparing the fifth edition together. As usual, we make an open call to all composers to send in short works. For this edition we work together with Firgun Ensemble & Koi Collective.

For whom?

This call is for all composers active in Flanders, regardless of origin, age, education or other parameters.

What?

Composers get the opportunity to have their work professionally performed, recorded, mixed and mastered. In addition, the composers’ work is promoted (inter)nationally and the composition receives airplay on Klara.

For this edition, composers have three options:

  1. A composition for the clarinet quintet Firgun Ensemble (string quartet + clarinet) or for Koi Collective (duo piano & alto or soprano sax)
  2. A composition for Firgun Ensemble or Koi Collective with an electronic component
  3. An electronic or electroacoustic work

Submissions are open until November 30, 2023.

Each composer may submit a maximum of one entry.

Organisation

  • Kunstenpunt/Flanders Arts Institute: the Flemish support center for visual arts, performing arts and classical music
  • ComAV: the association of composers in Flanders
  • Klara: the classical music channel of the VRT.

Jury

The jury will be chaired by Vincent Goris of Klara and will consist of one musician from each ensemble, and Hanne Deneire as representative of ComAV. The entries will be anonymized beforehand, so the judging can happen anonymously.

For the ensemble pieces, the selection will take into account whether the scores are performable by the ensembles. Furthermore, attention will be paid to the musical qualities and whether the music fits within the daily programming of Klara. In addition, the partners want the selection to provide an inclusive, diverse and representative picture of composing Flanders, and a balanced gender balance will be taken into account. We will select ± 20 compositions to appear on the CD.

Recording & distribution

The music will be recorded by VRT at Studio Toots and released by Kunstenpunt on CD and online. The recordings will be made available on mainstream streaming services. The CD will not be sold commercially, but distributed for promotional purposes by Kunstenpunt at fairs, sector events and meetings. Composers and ensembles will also receive a few copies to distribute themselves. The music is given a place in Klara’s midday programming.
