Every year, Playground offers a platform for artists unbound by a single discipline and working at the intersection between the stage and contemporary art. Both M Leuven and STUK present live performances and installations, often new productions or Belgian premieres. Playground is now looking to cast six professional dancers for Emily Mast’s performance at M.
Mast’s 60 minute piece is called IFIF and will premiere on Thursday, November 16th. IFIF is a group ritual in the form of a game that employs chance, dance and trance. It is one of many exercises that was born out of a methodology Mast began developing during the pandemic. Through hypnosis, tantra, dom/sub dynamics, emotional attunement, physical movement, free writing and theatrical techniques she invents consent and boundary frameworks that engage the subconscious and mine it as a tool for creation and transformation.
People of all ages, backgrounds, and body types are encouraged to apply. Dancers must have a minimum of 5 years of dancing training and/or experience. They must live in Belgium, or provide their own lodging. Dancers must be willing to dance on concrete (with or without shoes) for a minimum of one hour.
- Openness, humility and a willingness to collaborate are key to this process as it explores both individualism and collective identity.
- Participants must attend all rehearsals in order to perform.
- Rehearsals will be conducted in English.
Selected dancers will be invited to attend auditions on Monday, October 2nd from 14h – 16h. Rehearsals and performances will take place from November 13 to November 18. There will be four 60 minute performances in total.
The rehearsal schedule is as follows:
- Monday Nov 13 from 9-18h
- Tuesday Nov 14 from 12-16h
- Wednesday Nov 15 from 12-16h
- Thursday Nov 16 from 12-16h
The four performances are as scheduled:
- Thursday Nov 16 from 19h-20h
- Friday Nov 17 from 13h-14h
- Saturday Nov 18 from 13h-14h and 17h-18h
Dancers will be paid a total amount of 1200 euro (vat incl.) for rehearsals and performances. Payment can be made through invoice, an organization or interim contract. There is a separate budget for travel expenses within Belgium, and catering during the festival days.
