On the sustainability, complexity and approach of the enterprise of an estate.

The care for the legacy of visual artists is crucial for the cultural heritage of tomorrow. Correct preservation and stewardship of the collection and the archive keeps the oeuvre alive. Diverse partners may play a part in this.

In addition to the heirs and the family of the artists, private and public as well as academic institutions may have an important voice in the matter. The sudden responsibility for an artistic legacy is not easy to bear. What is a good step-by-step plan and what role can archives, museums, universities and galleries play? Can artists’ heirs cooperate and can they learn from each other? What is the role of government in this matter? And, last but not least, how can living artists prepare their artistic legacy?

On 19 & 20 April 2017, we examined these questions in greater depth during a two-day conference ‘Artist estates, a legacy’ organized by Kunstenpunt/Flanders Arts Institute, NICCEstate Philippe Vandenberg & BOZAR with the support of Art Brussels.

We talked with three experts about the topic and recorded these short interviews in the wonderful ateliers of late Philippe Vandenberg in Molenbeek, Brussels. The films are shot by Sander Tas.

Shervone Neckles-Ortiz is Artists Support Manager for the Joan Mitchel Foundation in New York. She talks about the importance of creating your own living legacy.
