Working group advice: module for starting artists

Through this open call, we want to put together an external working group that will thoroughly review the module for starting artists, gather feedback, and provide input for its rewriting.

For who?

Are you (or were you) a starting artist and would you like to contribute your thoughts on what advice you could have used (at the time)? Do you experience (high) barriers to getting started as a beginning artist and would you like to help us assess whether we are paying sufficient attention to this? Or do you support starting artists and would you like to contribute your expertise? Then this call is for you.

• You are active in the visual arts, performing arts, and/or classical music.
• You are not (or no longer) studying. Or you did not follow the traditional path of art education as an artist.
• You are at the start of your professional career – regardless of age – or you still have vivid memories of what it was like to be a starting artist.
  • Or you have experience in supporting or guiding artists who are at the start of their professional careers.
  • Or you are experiencing social barriers to starting your career.

Due to their underrepresentation in the arts, we want to encourage everyone of color, women, people with disabilities or neurodivergence, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and individuals who experience financial barriers to participate.

When?

You are willing to set aside time to thoroughly review the module for emerging artists between November 19 and 25, and to commit to three meetings on the following dates:

• Tuesday November 25, 2pm to 5 pm
• Monday December 1, 2 pm to 5 pm
• Tuesday December 9, 2 pm to 5 pm

What does Flanders Arts Institute offer?

• Flanders Arts Institute will take care of organizing the meetings and rewriting the module. We will take notes and get to work on the results of the working groups. If you wish, you can be listed as a contributor on the page.

• We offer you compensation of €850 excluding VAT for the entire process.
• Train tickets will be reimbursed.

How to participate?

Submissions can be made until 14 November by emailing femke@kunsten.be.

We ask you to answer the following questions briefly (max. 15 sentences per question):

1. Briefly introduce yourself: what path have you already taken in the arts? For reference, see the item ‘who’ we are looking for.
2. Why are you interested in this project?
3. Do you have specific expertise or a specific topic you would like to focus on within the working group?
4. Are you available on all three days of the working group meetings and will you be joining us in person or digitally?

On Wednesday 19 November, you will receive an email informing you whether or not you have been selected.

How do we make a selection?

• We review all submissions with four colleagues from Flanders Arts Institute.
• We aim for a group of six people.
• We look at your motivation and the focus you want to place on the module for starting artists.
• We try to put together a dynamic and varied group with attention to different areas of expertise, themes, disciplines, ages, and underrepresented groups.

Accessibility

Flanders Arts Institute wants to take your needs into account. Do you have specific transportation needs, require a Flemish Sign Language interpreter, or is there anything else we can help you with? Please let us know via the access rider (the accessibility document) that will be sent to you if you are selected.

The three sessions will take place in person at the Flanders Arts Institute office. If you are unable to attend in person, you can participate online.
