Art Explora – Cité internationale des Arts Residency Programme 2027
This residency program is open to artists and artist collectives, researchers, curators, and writers of all nationalities, without age restrictions, who can demonstrate a minimum of five years of professional activity and have exhibited their works and research at an international level.
Residencies last 3 OR 6 MONTHS, and applicants may apply for one of the sessions:
- Session 1: March – August 2027
- Session 2: September 2027 – February 2028
Eligible artistic disciplines include: visual arts, performance and live arts, digital arts and curatorial practices.
Eligible research fields include: humanities, social sciences, cultural studies and history, technological innovation, and ecology.
Residency Programmes
Two residency programmes are available:
- SOLO programme: open to artists and writers working across visual arts, performance, digital practices, literary works, or other experimental disciplines.
- COLLECTIVE Programme: open to collectives of artists, or collectives of artists together with researchers and/or curators, working collaboratively.
If you are interested in the COLLECTIVE programme, only one application should be submitted by one of the collective members.
Each resident is hosted at Art Explora – Cité internationale des arts (Montmartre site).
For the SOLO programme, each resident benefits from:
- 3 to 6 months residency at Art Explora – Cité internationale des arts (Montmartre site)
- A fully equipped studio-apartment (approximately 50m²)
- A monthly living grant of 1.000EUR
- A production grant of up to 3.000EUR
- A round-trip travel to/from the residence
- Access to production facilities and local networks
For the COLLECTIVE programme, each collective benefits from:
- a 3-months residency at Art Explora – Cité internationale des arts (Montmartre site)
- A fully equipped studio-apartment (approximately 50m²) *
- A monthly living grant of 2.000EUR, to be shared
- A production grant of 3,000 euros, to be shared
- A round-trip travel to/from the residency for each member of the collective (up to a maximum of 2,.000EUR)
* One studio apartment is made available per collective: the workspace can easily be shared between the members of the collective, while a single member is housed as the resident. If necessary, the double bed and the sofa bed can be shared between members.
Selection
Up to twenty residents are selected each year. In addition to evaluating the candidate’s professional background, the committee members pay particular attention to the quality of the project, its connection to the themes of the residency, and the importance of its location in France for its development.
The selection committee brings together distinguished international figures from the fields of art, curation, and research, together with representatives of the Cité internationale des arts and the Fondation Art Explora:
- Hoor Al-Qasimi (United Arab Emirates): President and Director of the Sharjah Art Foundation
- Fernanda Brenner (Brazil & France): Curator, writer, and founding artistic director of Pivô, São Paulo
- Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev (Italy & United States): Curator, author, and honorary visiting professor at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design, Basel
- Stuart Comer (United States): Chief Curator, Media and Performance (The Lonti Ebers Chair), Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
- Hans Ulrich Obrist (Switzerland & United Kingdom): Artistic Director, Serpentine Galleries, London
- Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung (Cameroon): Director, Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), Berlin
- X Zhu-Nowell (China & United States): Director and Chief Curator, Rockbund Art Museum (RAM), Shanghai
