Open Call: Frame Curatorial Research Fellowship
Frame Contemporary Art Finland is pleased to announce the Frame Curatorial Research Fellowship, a four-year programme for contemporary art curators.
The first two fellowships are organised in collaboration with the Casco Art Institute in the Netherlands and EVA International (Ireland’s Biennial of Contemporary Art) in Ireland. Between 2020–2023 the programme will host four fellows in total.
We are now seeking two candidates for 2020–2021 who are keen to develop the critical potential of curatorial research and to rethink the utilisation and value of research both within institutions and society at large.
The deadline for applications for the two first fellowships is June 7, 2020.
About the fellowship
The programme offers four full months of working time with a stipend of 11,200 EUR. The programme partners will also provide funding for a small production budget and cover any necessary travel and accommodation costs. Fellows selected for the programme will have the opportunity to dive into curatorial research in an institutional environment comprising Frame, its international partners, and various associates including artists, researchers, other practitioners, and institutional actors.
The programme offers support for developing new curatorial research practices and cultivating active practices embedded in an organisational context. What kind of curatorial research is needed in order to imagine new ways presenting and mediating contemporary art and cultural production in forms inseparable from daily life, politics and the policies of artists and institutions?
The fellowships also offer an opportunity to re-think what internationality and mobility of curatorial research can mean in the future. Are there new ways in which travelling, physical mobility and being present in certain geographical contexts can support socially and ecologically sustainable research practices?
The programme seeks new forms of research that can renew curatorial and institutional working habits and introduce new ideological frameworks for sustainable international mobility within the curatorial research field.
The first two fellowships, “Mapping and Unmapping Geographies” organised with Casco Art Institute and “Local, International and Planetary Fictions” organised with EVA International are both unpacking the ways in which geographies can be understood within the field of contemporary art and societies today. The selected research contexts highlight the need for new ways of situating art and curatorial research into different geopolitical and geo-cultural contexts in order to imagine socially and culturally just shared futures.
