Art during crisis: open discussions for artists and professionals in times of crisis
Art and the world are inextricably linked. Art during crisis explores the role of art in times of crisis, such as war or persecution. During monthly, digital discussions, we pass the word to a voice from the arts field as a starting point.

- 5 June – on hospitality for displaced artists and cultural workers, existing literature and good-practices for art organisations with Fameus and Rana Yazaji (On the Move)
- Fameus is a cultural organization in Antwerp that supports both professional and non-professional artists and creatives. Through their project Stadscanvas, they work closely with artists with migration experience, searching together for creative opportunities, Dutch language practice, and connections to the local cultural field. In collaboration with Atlas, Cera, and Dēmos, and together with a network of cultural partners, they developed a step-by-step guide for organizations aiming to work more inclusively with artists with migration experience. This guide is based on real experiences, research, and input from the artists themselves. In their presentation, they ’ll introduce this practical tool, designed to help cultural organizations reflect, adapt, and open their doors to new voices in meaningful and sustainable ways.
- Rana Yazaji is a researcher, trainer and cultural manager; she serves as the co-director of ‘Arts and International Cooperation‘ at Zurich University of the Arts and is currently conducting artistic research on contemporary arts and popular culture during and post-war. She bases her work on the combination of research and cultural practices, focusing on three interconnected levels: creative initiatives, institutional building and policy discussions. In 2011, she co-founded Ettijahat- Independent Culture, a Syrian organisation formed to support independent arts and culture to play their role in social and political transformation. In 2014, Yazaji became the Executive Director of Culture Resource (Al Mawred Al Thaqafy), a regional cultural organisation active in the Arab Region. Since 2023, she has been the co-director of Artas Foundation, the Swiss Foundation for Arts in Regions in Conflict. For this session Rana will present the publication ‘Intersecting Temporalities: At-Risk and Displaced Artists in Transition (Volume 1 Scoping Review)’ she has written for On The Move. The is the first of four publications from On the Move’s research and action project, which focuses on the situation of at-risk and displaced artists. This inaugural publication marks the beginning of a comprehensive and multi-faceted exploration into the challenges and opportunities faced by arts workers who have been compelled to leave their homes due to various forms of adversity. This first publication is conceived as a scoping review of existing literature on the topic, eg. project reports, testimonies, guides, and toolkits that include as well the collection of many at-risk art-workers’ voices and recommendations.
