Open call for the 2024-2025 studio residency programme

Call
Workspace Brussels

Through an annual open call, artists are invited to share a project proposal with us. The selected artists are offered studio space within the residency programme.

Whom is the residency programme aimed at?

The residency programme is aimed at Belgian and international artists working within the performing arts in the broad sense of the word (dance, performance, theatre, crossovers with other disciplines). We support both research and creation.

For which period can I apply?

In this round, you can apply for a studio for the 2024-2025 season, which runs from mid-August 2024 to mid-July 2025. Once your project is selected, we will map out the needs of your project together and discuss collaboration opportunities.

We work with two residency blocks during the season: the first block runs from mid-August to the end of December, and the second block runs from early January to mid-July. The residencies of the first block are fixed in March 2024, the ones of the second block in September 2024.

We do not offer residencies between mid-July and mid-August, and during the Christmas holidays.

What does workspacebrussels offer?

  • Studio space: once your project is selected, we look for a suitable space in the requested period(s). Thanks to our partners, we have several weeks of studio space each year in different places in the city. The calendar is different every month, so schedules are made according to availability. View the studios here.
  • Technical equipment: the studios are not technically equipped or supported. Where possible, we do provide basic technical equipment, such as a sound system, microphone or projector.
  • Overnight accommodation: we only offer overnight accommodation to foreign artists or team members. Possibilities depend on availability in our guesthouse, where we have two bedrooms with two single beds each. A baby cot is also available.
  • Budget: we provide a flat fee for travel expenses and lunch. The amount is calculated based on the number of team members and the number of residency days.
  • Sharing: if you wish, you can share your work with the team and/or fellow residents at the end of your residency. This can also take the form of a (semi)public try-out.
  • Lunch: on Tuesdays, all residents currently working in the studios are invited to a communal lunch.
  • Our library is open to all residents and is curated based on their suggestions.

How can I apply?

To apply for a residency, fill in the online form found at the bottom of this page. The application form consists of three parts:

  • practical questions: studio, dates, technique, team…
  • artistic questions: artistic practice, plan for the residency
  • documentation: website, video links, portfolio

You can answer the second part (the artistic questions) either in writing or via an audio or video recording. We are happy to read or listen to you in Dutch, French or English.

Deadline

The open call will be launched on Monday 2 October. You can complete, save and/or edit your form until Sunday 3 December 2023 at 10pm. At that time, the online system will be closed. Make se sure to click ‘submit’ before the deadline. No applications will be accepted after the deadline.

Selection

The selection of artistic proposals will be done by the workspacebrussels team and one or two external jury members. In the selection, we pay attention to the innovative or experimental character of the project, the diversity within the programme, and the feasibility of the proposal within the Brussels context. We will select 15 to 20 projects. All candidates will receive a reply by e-mail on Thursday 1 February 2024.
