What?

Located in the Nord department, in the Hauts-de-France region, and very close to the Belgian border, the Château d’Esquelbecq is an emblematic architectural ensemble of the Flemish Renaissance, with its moats, turrets, dovecote bulb dating from 1606, as well as its compartmentalized gardens. A family property, the castle has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1987.

After a long sleep of more than thirty years, the Château d’Esquelbecq association, created in the spring of 2017, has initiated the rehabilitation and reopening of the estate to the public. Every summer, a cultural season is organized there around three themes: the garden, history and contemporary art.

In this setting conducive to the discovery of works by artists, the Art au Jardin exhibitions invite art lovers, lovers of gardens and history. For this new edition of the year 2022, the Château d’Esquelbecq association is offering a call for projects aimed at contemporary artists and creators.

ART IN THE GARDEN : WATER AND DREAMS
From June 4th to September 18th

Water and dreams is an outdoor exhibition which happily spreads throughout the wooded areas: the gardens, the kitchen garden, the dove cot, as well as the park, the greenhouse or the castle courtyard.

Each work of art establishes a dialogue with nature, the water cycle which is so essential, or with the outstanding architectural features of the estate for an unprecedented journey.

Thus, while wandering about the garden, the visitors will be able to discover about fifteen works: sculptures, vegetal structures, productions hanging from the boughs of trees, lighting installations, works on the water mirror or fitting the walls and the architecture.

This exhibition and topic chosen intend to highlight new artistic practices or trends related to our resources and our water ecosystems, such as the caring for its preservation, through recycling, or by the economical use of resources.

For this third season of Art in the garden, the association of “le château d’Esquelbecq” has partnered with the Bacqueville gallery, located in Lille, and with Lille 3000, a cultural event in the wake of Lille 2004 – European cultural capital city, as part of the Utopia project in its sixth season, which tackles new utopias.

Moreover, the opening dates of the exhibition Water and dreams, will take place on June 4th and 5th with the national event Rendez-vous aux jardins. “The garden faced with climate changes”, an event that brings together visitors from all over France to visit gardens.
